Really Tangled Up In Art

Lately, I’ve been even more tangled up in art than usual. I have been learning oil painting; I am still tangling; and I also started stamp carving. I’m not certain if the stamp carving could be considered art yet, but it certainly is fun.

  1. You've been a busy artist! Your Fengle Breaking Free tile is delightful, as is your Moebius logo design–they both really sing! So does your Fengle with friends Zia–I'm just really enjoying everything you posted! Your orchid looks huge and luscious, and I'm jealous that you are getting to spend some time working in oils. (Not in a bad way, though…good for you!)As for stamp carving, YES, it is art! It's called printmaking! 🙂 I adore handcarved stamps and carving stamps myself…just don't seem to have enough time to dive deep into it, like I'd like to. I am a lurking member of two Yahoo groups for stamp carvers, and I encourage you to check them out. They welcome carvers of any level, and provide lots of helpful advice and encouragement. The names of the two groups are "CarvingConsortium" and "erasercuts." The Carving Consortium (CC for short) has been way busier recently; erasercuts has been very quiet. But the archives of both groups are a rich source of information and inspiration. Also, if you can get your hands on a copy of HolyMolyMackeroly by Gloria Page, it is a wonderful read based on her experiences establishing a card design business using her own handcarved stamps. It is about art, business, and life…a truly delightful book. It is out of print, but you can find used copies in Amazon, and maybe Barnes & Noble. Gloria also did a wonderful DVD: Art Stamping Innovations: Carving Workshop by Creative Catalyst Products, and did a how-to carving book with North Light Books called Art Stamping Workshop. Happy Carving, Painting, and Tangling!Amy in TN

  2. Hi Amy, Thanks for the nice comments and information about stamp carving. I hope you didn't take offense at my stamp-carving comment. I didn't mean that stamp-carving in general is not an art form. I meant that the way I do it may never become art! I will look into those books. They sound fun.
