Based on the windows at our church, Seton Parish, Birdie successfully deconstructed this tangle:
TIPS:
- Draw the initial grid slightly larger than usual so you have lots of room for embellishment.
- Don’t worry too much about ending up with perfect squares. This is a tangle, after all.
- When drawing the arcs in step 3, keep them round.
- Try to start and stop the arcs in the middle of each line.
You can also watch me draw it on Youtube (accompanied by the Seton Choir and Birdie on her flute.)
Cela me semble amusant. je vais l’essayer cette semaine et peut-être participer au Challenge

What a great endlessly variable tangle! I especially like the 3D effect on the curved variation in the middle tile. I too now see possible tangle patterns in lots of places and its fun how suddenly a possible step-out sometimes pops out!

We just arrived home from a 3 week trip to South Africa today (30 hours door to door—don’t ask 😉 Whenever we travel I make my husband a little crazy oohing and ahhing over patterns I see everywhere and often asking him to wait while I take a photo 🙂

Beautiful! I love the one on toned paper with black edges. Can’t wait to give it a try!

Hello Cris,
I have both your books and I have just recently ‘conquered’ the pattern “Paradox”. However I am finding it puzzling as to where to shade it for best effect. I looked up your books and one of them had Paradox in it together with variations, but nothing really on the shading aspects. I have tried a few things, but nothing I do is making it POP ! Is there a best way of going about shading ‘Paradox’ please?

I think that shading paradox, like shading most tangles, depends on how it is drawn and how it fits in the tile or ZIA that it is a part of. I don’t have a definitive answer for you, but here are some a link to some of Rick’s paradox. http://zentangle.blogspot.com/2010/03/paradox-q.html And if you want to see a bunch more, here is a link to Laura’s Diva Challenge 38 which challenged us to use Paradox. There are 86 links to follow there.
